Teams of two will complete an unmarked course of approximately 10 km or 25 km using a printed map to navigate between checkpoints on foot, mountain bike, and kayak.

Teams are expected to find their way using the provided map, landmarks, and their own navigation skills.

The first team to complete the entire course, having successfully visited all checkpoints, will be declared the winner.

Teams are required to complete the entire distance together, remaining within hearing and visual distance of one another at all times while helping and supporting each other throughout the adventure.

Teamwork, communication, and decision-making are essential. Understanding your teammate's strengths, as well as your own capabilities, will play a key role in navigating the course and overcoming challenges along the way.

Team Categories

All 10km and 25km events are raced in teams of two and may enter one of the following categories:

Mixed Pair (10km and 25km)

Explorer – 10 KM

Distance and Route

The Explorer course will cover approximately 10 km and is designed for first-time adventurers, families, and those looking to experience the excitement of adventure racing.

Expected Duration: 1 – 3 Hours

Disciplines:

• Mountain Biking: 7 km (approx.)

• Trekking: 2 km (approx.)

• Kayaking: 1 km (approx.)

Challenger – 25 KM

Distance and Route

The Challenger course will cover approximately 25 km and is designed for teams looking for a more demanding adventure racing experience.

Expected Duration: 2 – 5 Hours

Disciplines:

• Mountain Biking: 17 km (approx.)

• Trekking: 6 km (approx.)

• Kayaking: 1 – 2 km (approx.)

Disciplines

Mountain Biking

Teams should be prepared for a variety of riding conditions, including single-track trails, gravel roads, steep climbs, and sections of paved road. Suitable mountain bikes are required.

Trekking

Trekking sections will take teams through a variety of terrain and require participants to navigate between checkpoints on foot.

Kayaking

Kayaking sections will take place on flat water. Kayaks and paddles will be provided by the event organizers.

Vagabond Mazowi kayaks will be used. These kayaks are exceptionally stable, easy to paddle, and ideal for both experienced paddlers and first-time kayakers.

Navigation

Navigation is at the heart of Adventure Racing and the Terra Nova experience.

The course is not marked, and teams are required to navigate using a printed map provided by the race organisers. Teams will use roads, trails, landmarks, and terrain features to find checkpoints and make their way around the course.

No previous navigation experience is required. If you can read a basic street map, you'll have everything you need to get started.

Maps

Teams will use a map to locate checkpoints and navigate their way around the course.

Colour printed Google Maps will be supplied by the race organisers at registration.

As maps will be used throughout the race, waterproofing is essential. Teams are strongly encouraged to bring large zip-lock bags or map cases to protect their maps from water, mud, and weather.

Teams are also advised to bring a pen or permanent marker to assist with route planning and marking important information on the map before the start.

Maps are a critical piece of race equipment and will not be replaced if lost, damaged, or misplaced during the event.

Navigation is at the heart of Adventure Racing. Plan wisely, work together, and Find Your Way.

Adventure Racing is designed to challenge both your physical and navigation abilities.

At least one member of each team must be capable of basic navigation using a map and landmarks. Teams should be able to orientate their map to features in the surrounding terrain and make informed route choices throughout the event.

Teams should also be able to describe the steps they would take should they become lost or uncertain of their location on the course.

All team members must be suitably competent in the disciplines included in the event, as specified by the race organiser, and be capable of completing the event without assistance from anyone other than their teammate.

By entering the event, teams acknowledge that they possess the necessary skills, experience, and fitness required to safely participate in and complete the event

Adventure Racing requires participants to be self-sufficient and prepared for changing conditions throughout the event. Mandatory equipment is in place to ensure the safety of all competitors and to help teams navigate and complete the course successfully.

All teams are responsible for carrying the required equipment for the duration of the race. Please review the equipment list carefully and ensure you arrive fully prepared on race day.

Please ensure that you are able to attend the event before completing your entry and payment, as entry fees may not be refundable in accordance with the event cancellation policy.

Cancellations & Refunds

Teams may cancel their entry at any stage by notifying the event organisers via email.

Please note that all entry fees are non-refundable. We therefore ask that participants only complete their entry and payment once they are certain that they can attend the event. Once an entry is received, planning, administration, and event costs are incurred on behalf of the participant.

Entries may not be deferred or transferred to future Terra Nova events.

Should a team be unable to participate, they may transfer or sell their entry to another team. This arrangement is the responsibility of the teams involved, and the event organisers must be notified of any transfer prior to race day.

If two incomplete teams decide to combine and race as a single team, one of the original entries will be regarded as a cancellation and the above refund policy will apply.

In the event that the race is cancelled due to circumstances beyond the organisers' control, including but not limited to extreme weather, natural disasters, acts of terrorism, government restrictions, or other force majeure events, every effort will be made to refund as much of the entry fee as possible. Any refund amount will be determined only after all event-related costs have been calculated and settled. Participants should be aware that, due to the significant fixed costs involved in organising an event, any refund may be limited.

Should the event be cancelled, it will not be rescheduled.

Personal Responsibility

I understand and acknowledge that participation in this event involves inherent risks and challenges associated with Adventure Racing, including but not limited to mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, navigation, and travel through natural environments.

I understand that these activities carry the risk of injury, including serious injury, permanent disability, mental trauma, paralysis, or death. I confirm that I possess the necessary fitness, skills, knowledge, experience, judgment, and equipment required to participate safely and responsibly.

I understand and accept that I am responsible for my own safety and well-being, as well as providing initial assistance to my teammate where required. I acknowledge that assistance from event organisers, marshals, emergency personnel, or rescue services may not always be immediately available due to factors such as weather conditions, terrain, communication limitations, or other ongoing incidents.

Should I encounter a section of the course where I believe the level of risk exceeds my abilities or comfort level, I accept that it is my responsibility to make an appropriate decision. This may include selecting an alternative route, avoiding a hazard, slowing down, or withdrawing from a stage or the event entirely.

Participants are expected to use common sense, good judgment, and personal responsibility at all times when assessing terrain, weather conditions, obstacles, and other potential hazards.

By entering the event, I confirm that I have read and understood this statement and accept full responsibility for my participation. I further agree that I participate entirely at my own risk and indemnify the event organisers, landowners, sponsors, volunteers, and associated parties against any claims arising from my participation in the event.
